CHAPTER SIX
STANDING at the cooker, stirring the mince into the fried onions, Demelza could see the relaxed evening stretching ahead of her. Nick and Ianni would be coming up to join her soon. It would be just the three of them round the table andâ¦
Suddenly she put down her spoon at the side of the cooker and pulled the pan off the heat. What was she doing, planning to set up a cosy little family unit? Would Nick feel as if she was trying to take over his personal life? Heâd told her that there were too many complications in his life already. But she wasnât planning to be a further complication. Just someone who was very close to him, mentally and physically. Whenever they were close together, she could feel a strong magnetic pull that told her they were so right for each other, soâ¦
âDaddyâs in the shower,â said a small voice.
Demelza turned and saw Ianni outlined in the doorway, with the rays of the setting sun behind him. His hair was still wet from the shower, his feet were bare and he was wearing white cotton pyjamas. He looked like a little cherub.
âCan I come in, Demelza?â he said.
âOf course you can.â
She walked across to meet him and he put his little hand in hers.
âIâve got my jimjams on,â Ianni said solemnly. âDaddy said I could wear what I liked, so I thought Iâd get into my jimjams so I donât have to do any more undressing and dressing. Itâs such a pain, isnât it?â
Demelza nodded. âIâve put this dress on because itâs nice and cool for cooking in.â
âItâs very pretty,â Ianni said, fingering the lime green cotton. He looked up at her. âIt sort of goes with your hair. Your hair is pretty, too. Can I touch it?â
She bent down so that Ianni could take a strand between his thumb and finger. âWhat do you think, Ianni?â
âDid you have to make it this colour with some stuff from a bottle, Demelza?â
Demelza laughed. âNo, it was this colour when I was born, but I think itâs faded a bit.â
âMy mumâs hair must have faded a lot because she has to keep putting blonde stuff on it. I asked her what colour it really was and she said she couldnât remember and I shouldnât be so nosy.â
âDoes Daddy know youâve come up here, Ianni?â
âWellâ¦erâ¦â
âNo, Daddy doesnât know!â Nick bent his head to come in through the doorway, which hadnât been made for tall people. âYou scalliwag! Demelza needs a bit of peace and quiet so she can get on with the cooking.â
âThatâs OK,â Demelza said quickly. âIanni can help me.â
âOoh, yes, please! What can I do?â
âYou can mash these cooked potatoes and make them nice and soft. Hereâ¦letâs put some butter on themâ¦Thatâs fineâ¦Press as hard as you like. You canât spoil themâ¦â
Demelza turned away from the table where Ianni was now crouching on a chair, bashing on the potatoes with a wide, happy smile on his face. Nick was standing close behind her, a tender expression in his eyes.
